Reverend Betty Jane Matthews Lee was born November 16, 1933 and was led on to glory by the Lord Friday, November 13, 2020 at 10:05 am. The last remaining child out of 12 from the union of Handy Matthews and Katie Cheek Matthews, she had an illustrious career in the ministry as well as being respected member of her community.
Born in Carthage, North Carolina she attended the Moore County School system where she graduated from Pickney High School and later attended Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, where she also instructed other students. Three years of bible college with WV Grant and an additional 2 years at AA Allen University. Anointed as an Evangelist at an early age led her to travel and preach across the entire eastern seaboard in which P. Mary Soul was “born again” in her ministry. Healing and delivering souls was the most important asset she possessed within her “fiery” sermons with a clear and concise message attached. Serving in all aspects of church duties she was a secretary, trustee, Sunday school teacher, deacon, and eventually a pastor in Sellars, SC. Four years she held this post and in 1972 the Lord let her ministry to Seagrove, NC at Redeemed Church of God. Founder and overseer of the BJ Lee Evangelistic Association, Inc. in which she also pastored a church in Ramseur, NC Gospel Temple for 3 years. Reverend Lee also served as Vice President of the General Missionary Department of the United Church of God. The Lord finally guided her back to her home church St. Mary’s Holiness Church where each Sunday you could expect a great message and leave with a touch of love. Some of her last projects were beautifying the sanctuary and uplifting the appearance of the “home” church that her family built many years prior.
Reverend Betty Jane Matthews Lee loved a good steak and the color pink, in which in her later years painted her home interior to be surrounded by its beauty! Family was first in her life and cherished being surrounded by all of her loved ones at any given time. A phone call away or a short trip to her house one could expect great advice and an even better cup of coffee! Reverend Betty Jane Lee is survived by her four children: Charles (Mona Lisa) Matthews of Carthage, NC, Linda Faye Lee Brower of Asheboro, NC, Johnnie Lee of Carthage, NC and James Cleatus Lee of Carthage, NC. A “special” niece Cheryl Mills (Walter) Degraffenried, Carthage, NC that assisted in all aspects of her care and well-being. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and assorted loved ones that can attest to how major of an influence Reverend Betty Jane Lee was in each of our lives!
