Doris Ruth Brown was born in Siler City, North Carolina on July 30, 1937 to the late Manley Edwards and Mishie Edwards. She was the baby of 16 children (nine girls and seven boys).
Doris was married to the late Fred Warren Brown, Sr. and was blessed to be the mother of four children. She always had high expectations of her children and she had a pristine image that was constantly upheld. In addition to loving her children, she also loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doris graduated from Chatham Training School in 1955 in Siler City, NC. She was one of their star basketball players. Rumor has it that she played to win in every game and many were intimidated by her.
Doris was a faithful member of Cox’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Ramseur, North Carolina, where she was a staple of consistency. She always expressed how much she loved gospel music and serving our great Lord and Savior. She diligently served on the usher board until her health declined.
Doris was employed for many years at Coleridge School in Coleridge, NC where she was loved and respected by all. From there she was employed at the cafeteria at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC. She then moved on to her final place of employment at the Siler City Police Department. She left an incredible legacy behind at each of her places of employment. She was well respected by all and expected everyone to do their job consistently, thoroughly, impeccably. Her children and grandchildren can testify to the fact that she expected you to do what you were supposed to when no one was looking.
Doris was a great leader and a pillar in the community. She was an active member of The Chatham Alumni Association and she was also very close to her classmates. She was pivotal in making sure that the Edwards family reunion was a success for many years. Her focus, drive and direction will be truly missed.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, the late Fred Warren Brown, Sr.; one daughter: Sharon Brown; eight sisters: Mozelle Foxx, Ione Hughes, Hazel Brooks, Lillian Foxx, Murrial Cheek, Margaret Jones, Lucille Edwards, Mary Kay Edwards; seven brothers: Jennings Edwards, Johnny Edwards, Walter Edwards, Ralph Walden, Clarence Edwards Sr., Bobby Edwards, and Harold Edwards.
